LEEUM,
A Masterpiece of Contemporary Architecture and Artistic Collaboration
The Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art is a private art museum created by the Samsung Cultural Foundation. The name "Leeum" is a combination of the last name of Samsung's founder, Lee Byung-chul, and the word "museum". It took about eight years to complete the museum, and the building itself is considered a work of art and an example of architecture.
The museum consists of three buildings designed by some of the world's most renowned architects: Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas. Mario Botta oversaw the entire project and was directly involved in the construction phase. The collaboration of three such distinct architects on a single museum project is considered an unprecedented event in the world of architecture.
Mario Botta used terra cotta bricks to symbolize the beauty of Korean ceramics, while Jean Nouvel combined corrosion-resistant stainless steel and glass in a way that expressed the cutting edge of modern art. Rem Koolhaas created a futuristic architectural space that seems to float in mid-air, using black concrete as an uncommon material.
