Seonyudo Park, "Traces of Time Represented in Architecture"

Seonyudo Island became an island in the Han River through the Han River development project in 1968. It had a small hill where the royals enjoyed strolling. As the city became more industrialized, it was also used as a water purification plant to provide drinking water to citizens. However, in 2002, it was transformed into Seonyudo Park.

Seonyudo Park has the meaning of urban regeneration where the past and present coexist because it did not erase the past and history. This is also the philosophy of the architect, Cho Seong-yong, who designed Seonyudo Park. Seonyudo Park, which is considered the first "environmental regeneration ecological park" in Korea, received the design award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for the first time in Korea in 2004. It has also won awards such as the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Asia-Pacific Region Landscape Art Award.

Cho Seong-Yong said, "Seonyudo Park is a series of works that reinterpret and organize the meaning of land that has changed over time," and "It started with the recognition that even industrial facilities were part of the land." In fact, this plan was a very unfamiliar attempt for modern people who are used to erasing the past and creating new things, and Seonyudo Park is also the first example in Korea where the architectural products of the industrial society were transformed into modern ones.

Currently, Seonyudo Park has become a popular attraction in Seoul where an average of 40,000 people visit on weekends.
